Xihao Zheng
I build interactive, cybernetic installations that sit between nature and technology, using sensors, algorithms, and physical materials to stage self regulating environments where data and infrastructure become tangible.
My practice explores the shifting boundary between nature and technology, evolving from a background in film into interactive, cybernetic systems. I hold a BFA in Film Design from the Beijing Film Academy and an MFA in Digital Arts from Pratt Institute. I see my move from cinema to installation not as a departure but as an expansion. Science fiction continues to shape my visual language and conceptual frameworks, and my work often operates in the in between zones of embodied and disembodied, natural and synthetic, science and fantasy. I build webs of intimacy between seemingly disparate material and immaterial forces to evoke imaginaries that exceed the limits of grand historical narratives and anthropocentric dominance.

My path has moved from interactive installations to performance and live practice, and then toward building complex, self regulating systems. I’m drawn to ecological, computational, and perceptual structures, and I often construct closed loops between sensors, algorithms, and physical environments so the work is not only reactive but internally regulated. Through coded weather, synthetic skies, and artificially cooled micro landscapes, I stage environments shaped by data and infrastructure. These are not metaphors. They are interfaces where aesthetics meets feedback and protocols press against biology. Ultimately, my work aims to make visible the hidden architectures behind contemporary life, including clouds that calculate, machines that remember, and ecologies that increasingly obey.
